Being the typical teenage boy I enjoy exploring in the woods in front of my house. I often spend hours looking over the fallen trees and wonder around the ponds that can be found there. I enjoy observing the behavior of animals in the wild and on occasion catch a creepy or crawly and place it in my aquarium at home where I keep it for a few days, later releasing it back out into the wild.

On one occasion I went fishing and caught a nice size bass, during spawning season when the fish come near the bank. I brought it home and kept it alive in a bucket, later trying to cook it. I don’t think I cooked it long enough because it was squishy when I bit into it. Later I was told you can’t cook much at 120 degrees so I figured that was my problem. It wasn’t bad with ketchup.

Anyways back to my story…
Many times I am still wandering the woods as it becomes dark. There is a wide cow pasture I have to cross to return from the ponds to get back to my house. On this particular night it was getting dark fast, the summer months had faded fast and it was getting into the winter months. Like I said it was really getting dark.

The grass in the pasture was high, I am talking really high, chest height. It is at times like these that I wish I was taller. I hate going through the tall grass when it is dark. You have to keep your wits about you because you can get spooked and scare easily as you can’t see what is in the grass around you. Needless to say, this isn’t the first time I have walked through the tall grass, the farmer must have moved his cows to another pasture so they hadn’t been feeding and the grass growed tall.

There are three methods to walking in tall grass, one is to run and hop this method is useful if you are getting a little scared. Shuffle and walk this method is really preferred in the hot summer months when snakes are about, the shuffling many times scares them off unless it is a rattle snake. Haven’t been bit yet. The third is a full out run, this is never advised as if there is a gopher’s hole somewhere you will trip and fall. I prefer the run and hop as it reduces my chance of hitting a gopher’s hole and I can make some good speed while staying above the tall grass which each jump.

On this particular day, I was walking with a stick that I found, then I started to hear a creepy laugh which echoed through my ear drums. I have never experienced this before nor since that day. I heard a creepy laugh coming from behind me. I turned around and saw something move behind a tree. I know how the mind can play tricks on you many times you see shadows as the sun falls. So I tried to relax as I starred at the tree. I know I saw something and it was BIG.

Then all of the sudden wham the tree came crashing down and there from where the tree once stood was this huge black dog, about the size of a medium sized horse. I figured that it had knocked down the tree. I then noticed that it’s eyes were emitting a faint red glow as if you shine a flashlight in its eyes. Unfortunately, I didn’t have one. I’ve since named it “Demon Dog” perhaps it is spawned from Hell itself. It doesn’t look like a normal dog as it’s size is massive and it looks like it has an oversized jaw. I don’t know of any dog nor animal that has glowing red eyes.

This dog or hell-hound, started to laugh. I know this sounds crazy but that is what happened. The laugh seemed to echo through the tall grass around me. I could see these white large teeth as it laughed. It was a little too close for comfort.

OMG! It ran into the brush… is it coming for me. I took off at a full sprint, I could see the lights from my house. I stepped in a gopher hold and fell, I don’t remember getting up but I was again running for my house. I knew the barbed wire fence was coming up fast but I ran full speed into it, I quickly removed the barbs from my chest ripping my shirt in the process, then quickly climbed over the wire fence.  I didn’t stop running until I was safe inside my house.  Once inside the house, I looked out the window and all looked peaceful and normal, no sign of the devil dog.

I told my mother what had happened and she threatened to ground me from the woods so I told her I was joking. I put some alcohol on my wounds where the barbwire had dug into my flesh.

The next day, I made a few spears with my pocket knife and went back out into the woods. I went to where the tree had fallen the day before and found some tracks they looked like giant dog tracks which were bigger than my hands.

Today, I am still haunted by its laughter. It is a good reminder for me as to get home way before it becomes dark. I have since made many spears and have made a bow so I am ready if it attacks or trys to eat me. I’ve made a few traps out in the woods, one of which was totally demolished, and I found some large tracks nearby.  It has to be something big.  I’ve since picked up some strong metal wire that I am now using for my snares.   It is only a matter of time before I catch this hound from hell.  And when I do I am going to pierce its heart with my spear.

I know I sound like an idiot but you dont get it, this is what really happened.
