Bigfoot Sightings

patterson_bigfootBigfoot sightings, as of July 2009, had ballooned to more than 800 in the U.S. alone, the most number of which had occurred in Washington. While most reports of Bigfoot sightings had occurred mostly in the U.S., international incidence of the event had been continuously increasing.

Often called as Sasquatch, which is literally translated as the ‘wild man of the woods‘,  the early settlers of modern-day British Columbia had often feared of the possibility of encountering the creature. Parallel to a total of 11 sightings since 2006, the Chinese often referred to this creature as ‘Yeti’, which means the ‘all devouring demon’. For years, the Chinese and Tibetans had feared the creature often seen in the highlands and known to have wondered during the dead of the winter.

Sightings: History and Records

History suggests that the Bigfoot had been with most of the human population for ages. While most of the present day sightings are dominantly recorded in U.S., stories of ancient civilizations throughout the world had proved that Bigfoot co-exists with human.

The civilization of Babylon, known for their system of writing, had recorded a creature called ‘Enkidu’. Other accounts throughout history had often referred to this creature as hairy, ferocious, and of enormous size. Epics such as that of Beowulf and Gilgamesh had more provided an almost sterling account of the creature. One of the most compelling written accounts of the Bigfoot is that of the China’s compiled dictionary in 200 BC during the Chou Dynasty. Often referred to as Feifei, how the Chinese had accounted and described the creature is seemingly similar to that of the recent and present day sightings. While Feifei is described by the Chinese to be that of a fairy known to live within the woods, the creature, which appears to closely resemble that of the humans and orangutans, numerous accounts provide that it had a penchant for human flesh.

Bigfoot Encounters

  • 1889 – L.A. Waddell of the British army had reported to have seen a creature traversing the northeast peak of the highlands of Sikkim. As reported on his memoirs, the footprints he saw remarkable and enormously large sized and human-like footprints.
  • 1921 – Mount Everest.   It was during their scaling of the Mount Everest when members of the British expedition saw a seemingly hairy and dark creature hovering at 17,000 feet above them. While the members of the team no longer saw the creature when they had reached the location, it was reported that the creature had left large size humanlike footprints. It was said that Lt. Col. Charles Kenneth Howard-Bury had reported the incident to the journalists of Sherpa of the area. While there may have been no concrete proof on the existence of the creature, numerous accounts of the Sherpa had provided their similar incidence with the metoh-kangmi, meaning ‘Abominable Snowman’.

  • 1951 – Mount Everest.  It was the team of the Everest Reconnaissance Expedition that had reported a sighting similar to that experienced by the team of Lt. Col. Charles Kenneth Howard-Bury. Eric Shipton, leader of Everest Reconnaissance Expedition team, had written in the Times of London their pursuit of the creature they had spotted in 18,000 feet traversing the grueling mountains. The tracks left by the creature said to be the metoh-kangmi are an approximate of 13 x 18 inches.
