Hell Hounds of East Anglia

For over half a decade the story of the Hounds of the Baskervilles has dominated modern folklore as one of the few ghost stories to inhabit supernatural creatures in the form of dogs.  However, this is no longer the case.  It looks like Sherlock Holmes may be getting a run for his money in a town called East Anglia located near the Norfolk, Essex, and Suffolk coastline. There are several variations within the story but the main story has held true for centuries among the inhabitants of this subtle yet haunted coastline. The tale is almost all always of the same a black hound with red eyes that are the size of saucers. The size always varies but never is it smaller than a large hell hound. What makes this ghostly story different? It has been around since the time of the Vikings. That’s right. It is very possible that old Erik the Red even knew of dear old “Black Shuck”.

So why on earth, or at least a dimension of it, does this poor old tired dog roam the shores? No one really knows. The story is simply that he, for whatever reason, gets bored and goes hunting. He roams about scaring the heck out of anything that will stand still long enough to catch the glimpse then goes on his merry way. Poor old thing seems to get his jollies of the mere appearance to someone. Okay, so there are several old stories that he may or may not have killed a few to a few hundred church goers one particular Sunday. Has this been proven? No not at all. In fact it is the only story of Black Shuck, meaning Black Demon, that even remotely places the animal at the scene of any murderous rampage of crime. For the most part this pup tends to roam around appearing headless a time or two and getting his kicks from screams of young children, old women, and the few and far between writers that feel the need to pen their horrific encounter for others to read and pass along.

In truth there is no evidence that shows Black Shuck ever existed. There is nothing in the stories that states where he comes from. Nothing in the stories tells of why he does the things he does. Maybe he didn’t get a good dinner one night. Perhaps the old pup was chucked from a Viking war ship on the way to anywhere but where they were actually headed. Then again maybe it was the story made up by a lonely housewife who was tired and just for once wanted her to children to be scared enough to stay in their beds fast asleep and let her have a peaceful evening. No one knows. However, it is a great story that legend says paved the way for a certain crime story novelist and a few hundred haunted ghost stories to come.

Owlman of Mawnan Sightings a Purported Cryptid

Owlman of Cornwall

The Mawnan Church

The Mawnan Church

The Owlman of Cornwall was first sighted in 1976 by two girls on a family vacation. The apparition appeared near the tower of the Mawnan Church and is often called the Owlman of Mawnan. The Owlman is purported to be a creature approximately five feet tall covered in grayish silver feathers with a wingspan of about ten feet. Said to have red glowing eyes and large talon feet, the Owlman is very close in description to the Mothman of West Virginia.

Recent Owlman Sightings

The Owlman has had several sightings over the last thirty three years, but only a handful of witnesses will go on the record to describe their encounter. The strangest thing of all seems to be Owlman’s preference to appear to young girls. Only one of the recent documented apparitions has been that of a young man and he was with his girlfriend when the Owlman was seen. The very first sighting that was recorded was actually in 1926 when two small boys claimed to have been chased by a large man-owl and hid behind an iron gate to protect themselves from its claws.  This sighting was reported in the local paper at the time but no other sightings have been recorded again until 1976. The most recent recorded sighting was in 1995.

Another peculiarity that is associated with Owlman sightings is UFO activity in the area when he appears. Each time that there has been a purported sighting of the Owlman there has been extensive UFO sightings in and around Cornwall. The Mothman of West Virginia is also associated with extensive UFO sightings. Many believe that this is not coincidence and that the Owlman is either a warning sign of aliens or is in fact of alien origin.

A curious point to consider is that the Owlman might actually be a kickback from ancient times and pagan beliefs. This area of Cromwell was rich in Pagan history and lore and one tends to consider that the name Mawnaan (only a single letter off of the current spelling) is that of a Pagan god who was represented as an Owl Man. A study of folklore about Mawnan Woods, where the church is located, may provide some revelation about Owlman.

Cryptid – The Owlman

In cryptozoology the Owlman is considered to be a Cryptid. A Cryptid is a creature that has had several sightings but the probability of existence lacks much scientific support. This does not invalidate the sightings at all, on the contrary, it makes them even more intriguing.

Bird-Men Creatures and Cryptids

There have been similar sightings of bird-men creatures throughout the world. Mothman and the Death Raptor are two famous entities that are much the same as the Owlman. Unlike his two counterparts though, Owlman stays in the vicinity of the church and Mawnan woods. Mothman and Death Raptor have been seen in many places not just in a certain area. Why Owlman is different in this aspect it is not currently known.

3 Million Payout for Capture of Mokele Mbembe

In the time of dinosaurs it was not uncommon to find a sauropod.  It’s large body supported by its massive four legs, using its long neck to feed on the various tree leaves and fruit or searching the depths of the water for various water plants.  If an un-welcomed intruder passes by he better not get too close or suffer the wrath of its long wip-like tail.  Since the extinction of the dinosaurs, there have been fossils of  more than 1000 different kinds of dinosaur species found around the Earth.  Could dinasours still be roaming the earth?

Mokele Mbembe Dinosaur or Monster?

Mokele Mbembe Dinosaur or Monster?

In the Congo’s of Africa there are native folklore of a monster, perhaps a small Brontosaurus called Mokele Mbembe, living  and roaming the area of Lake Tele.  The earliest sightings have occurred around 1776, sightings still occur today.   The animal is said to make a series of snorts and grunts that can be heard off from great distances.  It is this sound that has attracted the curiosity of people in the area which upon further examination at times result in an encounter of what many people describe something dragon like as massive as the mighty elephant.  They call this monster, Mokele Mbembe.

Several Mokele Mbembe sightings have occurred and are well documented.  One account described tracks found near the river in 1776 as “We never saw the beast, but it had to be monstrous”.  The french priest who observed the fresh massive footprints from a large beast noted the claw marks it made in the ground with the above referenced entry.  Another encounter in 1909 left the witnesses feeling like they have seen something out of some medieval fairytale, the creature was described as half dragon and half elephant. I myself can’t picture such a creature but it must have been terrifying walking up upon such a monster or dinosaur as this being unsure if it was a meat eater.

Expeditions were contracted to get to the bottom of these rumors of this dinosaur the native residents called Mokele Mbembe.  In one such expedition the natives were shown pictures and sketches of a sauropod dinosaur, they said that yes this was Mokele Mbembe, this was the creature they have been seeing all these years in the jungles around Lake Tele.  In 1981, near the Likouala River, one expedition heard very large splashes in the waters around the area.  A police officer at the scene said that he was within 30-40 feet of the creature that left smashed plants and trees as well as large footprints in the banks of the river.

The native people are very acquainted with this water enjoying creature roaming in the Likoula swampland. They call it “Mokele-Mbembe”  when translated from their native tongue means  “one who stops the flow of rivers”.   The local peoples believe the dinosaur is sacred or some type of god.  It is said that once one was killed and many in the tribe died after eating the meat of the creature.  The natives  now live in fear of the curse of the creature so many natives steer clear of the thick swamp which is considered the monster’s domain.

Numerous scientists acknowlege that this dinosaur,  “Mokele-Mbembe”, may genuinely exist because  coelacanths, which were once believed to have been extinct since the end of the Cretaceous period , have been caught off the eastern sea-coast of South Africa, near the Chalumna River in 1938.

This dinosaur remains elusive still today, in 1913 a bounty of $3 million dollars was established by the Smithsonian Institute in the United States, for the capture of the “Mokele-Mbembe”,  dead or alive .  Even with the occasional reported sighting of this creature and many expeditions to the area, the reward still goes unclaimed.
